Chinese Sons of Thunder

Paul Clayton was like many Christians, heavily involved in lots of activity at his church, but frustrated, and desired that his evangelistic attempts would be more effective. He first heard about Christianity Explained in the 1980’s from OAC Ministries in NZ, but his various activities distracted him from doing anything about it.

Back then, Paul was in his early 30’s, working as a builder in Lower Hutt, Wellington.

"I asked them if they would be interested to go through CE"

“I’ve always felt convinced of the need to share the Gospel and done it in various ways but had got to the stage of feeling . . . [I]  needed to add a different approach.”

Hebrews 5:12 says, “You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word!” (NLT)

A couple of years ago, God used this verse to challenge Paul and remind him of the urgency of sharing the gospel message with those who are without Christ.

He remembered CE. A quick internet search revealed it was still current. He ordered himself a leader’s manual and made himself very familiar with the material.

Paul prayed fervently for God’s help and then began looking around to see who he could start sharing the course with.

He had to wait and kept on praying and waiting.

To my frustration no one seemed interested and although I kept praying it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen. This went on for about a year and although I hadn’t given up, it did seem to be more and more unlikely.”
By this stage, there had been some major changes in Paul’s life.

Time has moved on and I now live in southern Hawkes Bay in Dannevirke working as a real estate salesperson as best as I am able. I say that because of contracting Multiple Sclerosis and am now permanently in a wheel chair.”

Each Saturday morning, for several years, Paul has sat on a street corner with a friend in Dannevirke , handing out gospel tracts and getting to meet many different people. He had become quite friendly with an Indian couple who owned a restaurant near the street corner.

“One day the penny dropped in my mind and I asked them if they would be interested to go throughCE, if nothing else to learn English better.
We went through it mostly just me and them as a couple. They became good friends and regularly came to church with us but didn’t quite get the concept of leaving the Hindu religion to follow Jesus ... yet. Ah well, it might be just a step on the way for them."

Paul didn’t stop there. Another Saturday he befriended a Chinese shopkeeper whose English name is John. They completed CE and John was soon baptised.

"Now Paul has two new Brothers
in Christ, ... Chinese Sons of Thunder"

Not long after this, Paul met Jim, another young Chinese man through his real estate job. A street evangelist in New Plymoth shared the gospel and prayed a prayer with him one day, but he didn’t really understand what had happened. Paul took Jim through CE and he too wanted to be baptised by the time he finished the course and is following the Lord.

"CE has been a wonderful tool
for sharing the glorious gospel."

Now Paul has two new brothers in Christ, John and James, Chinese sons of thunder. He has just finished The Bible Explained course.

“I saw The Bible Explained course when looking for CE on the internet along with the little course on the Sermon on the Mount (which John and I have gone through)”

Paul says, “CE has been a wonderful tool to share the glorious gospel! . . . I look forward to continuing to use it as a means of spreading the wonderful message."

Christianity Explained

is not a magic

CE is not a magic wand. If we reflect on Paul’s Indian friends and his new Chinese brothers, it is God’s choice who is saved and when they are saved. Whether you’ve been a Christian for a long time or a short time, CE is a clear and simple way to explain the truth in a way that is helpful for non-Christians and new Christians as well. We must cry out to God’s Spirit to work in us and through us, no matter how experienced we are at sharing the gospel.

If you’d like to get yourself ready so that you are able to teach others the “basic things of God”, you can oder your own copy of CE and The Bible Explained through the CE web site. If you would like someone to come and help train people at your church, please contact Christianity Explained.
